Songs from Musicals
I love to sing. One of my favorite places to do that right now is on Smule, one of those apps that let you sing and record karaoke style songs. It's great to be able to sing solo songs on there.
For example, it's fun to try to channel the young Julie Andrews when singing something like Camelot's Lusty Month of May
But it's much more fun to sing songs like Wicked's No Good Deed when you've got a camera to watch you sing it-- and can go back and watch your performance. It's not always perfect, but perfect is overrated!
I've never seen Man of La Mancha's Aldonza performed. I hope one day I get the chance to watch the whole production, rather than little snippets here and there.
An even newer songs that I enjoy singing is Hamilton's Burn. Of course, everyone loves this song: poor Eliza. She's so upset by her husband-- it's not even the cheating, is it? I enjoy trying to emote the resigned feeling by the end of the song.
I was trying to prepare for a Sondheim audition lately, so I tried brushing up on Merrily We Roll Along's Not a Day Goes By. I didn't think it really fit the character I was hoping to audition for, so I decided against it, but it's still an interesting song.
If you haven't been on Smule, you might think that the above indicates that it's best for solo songs, but some of the people on Smule are really quite fantastic singers, and it's a privilege to get to sing with them.
Crooney McCroon is one of those fantastic people. Here we are singing Guys and Dolls' Sue Me together. What a great song Sue Me is! Mixing can be tough, since you're doing it based on what you're hearing in crappy headphones on a mobile phone app, so I'm a little too quiet against his voice.
And of course, no one could hate Les Mis' A Little Fall of Rain. In this version, I really play up poor Eponine's wounds.
